Most carpeting is sold off the roll. Larger widths are known as broadloom. Carpets “squares” are popular because of the traditional look they offer. With the upsurge of antique and period furniture, the sight of stained wooden floorboards or parquet, set off with the old traditional carpet squares, enhances the overall period effect. Carpet square, of course, can be changed a round, so that areas of wear are spread evenly over the years. “Squares” is a name given to individual rectangles of pre-shaped carpets, whether they are square or not.
Exotic
From colorful square to exotic range — a wide range of choices awaits the home makers out to make their rooms more attractive. Large carpets will be called rugs, and oriental rugs are highly prized items for their exotic patterns and hard-wearing qualities, as well as their complete individuality. It is handy to remember that anyone laying a fitted carpet in an irregularly-shaped room, may fined he is obliged to pay for those pieces cut out for alcoves, having paid for them.
With carpet squares, different patterns of color may be laid and because each square can be lifted and cleaned individually their use is much floured in kitchens. There is one snag, though. Even the best fitted squares tend to skew or slide a little when heavy equipment is moved over them. That is why it is advisable to have washing machines, refrigerators, freezers and cooking stoves mounted on runners so that they can be moved out for cleaning or servicing with relative easy.
